FARM-BASED CURRICULUM

ScienceandFood is developing science curricula that focus on farming and food. We will pilot the curriculum for students at John R. Wooden High School (JRWHS); in partnership with Kindred Spirits Care Farm, JRWHS creates educational opportunities for students through the farm from gardening to entrepreneurship to caring for rescued farm animals.

Goals:

  • Increase knowledge of science and its role in the world around us.
  • Improve knowledge of food and cooking methods, with a focus on increasing familiarity of whole and fresh foods from the garden.
  • Improve science proficiency and graduation rates for students at JRWHS.
  • Create a high school curriculum that expands farm-based science curriculum for JRWHS and can be broadly adapted to other communities.

AWiSE STEM DAY

ScienceandFood brought some delightful ice cream science to the Advancing Women in Science and Engineering (AWiSE) STEM Day! AWiSE teamed up with EmpowHer institute to bring 7th grade girls from two schools in Gardena and Inglewood to experience a day full of STEM activities at UCLA.

Do you know why the secret ingredient to homemade ice cream is rock salt? When salt is added to ice, it helps ice stay at a colder temperature when it is taken out of the freezer. This is also called freezing point depression. The colder ice enables you to make ice cream in bags at home.
